Epic Games, One Of Fortnite Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard Confirms Retirement
Donald Mustard, Chief Creative Officer of Epic Games, the studio responsible for the gaming phenomenon Fortnite, has revealed his plans to retire at the end of September. Mustard, who played a pivotal role in Fortnite’s immense success, has been a key figure in the gaming industry for nearly 25 years.
In a heartfelt announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter, the 47-year-old expressed his gratitude for the incredible journey he has had in the gaming industry, collaborating with immensely talented individuals and being part of the creation of groundbreaking games.
Mustard’s journey in game development began when he co-founded ChAIR Entertainment in 2005, alongside his brother Geremy Mustard, Ryan Holmes, and other colleagues. ChAIR Entertainment made a name for itself with titles like Undertow, a subaqueous shooter released on Xbox Live Arcade in 2007, and the Metroidvania title Shadow Complex, which followed in 2009. In 2008, Epic Games acquired ChAIR Entertainment, setting the stage for further success.
One of the standout achievements during Mustard’s tenure at ChAIR Entertainment was the development of the iOS trilogy Infinity Blade. These games not only demonstrated the graphical capabilities of Apple’s early mobile devices but also featured engaging gameplay reminiscent of the classic NES title Punch-Out!!
Donald Mustard’s role at Epic Games took a significant turn in 2016 when he was promoted to the position of Worldwide Creative Director. It was during this time that Fortnite was introduced in 2017. The battle royale mode of the game quickly became a cultural phenomenon, with its availability on various gaming platforms, including PCs, consoles, and mobile devices. By 2020, Fortnite had amassed over 350 million registered players, solidifying its position as one of the most influential games of the 21st century, particularly among younger gamers. The game’s success also inspired numerous imitations, eager to replicate its winning formula.
In a statement shared on Twitter in December of the previous year, Mustard emphasized that “Fortnite will never be ‘finished.'” He highlighted the game’s role as a dynamic and ever-evolving world, suggesting that its future would be filled with continuous updates and innovations.
While the precise reasons for Mustard’s retirement remain undisclosed, his recent announcement on X celebrated his remarkable journey. It began with Advent Rising, followed by the ChAIR era featuring titles like Undertow, Shadow Complex, and the Infinity Blade trilogy, and culminated in his instrumental contributions to the creation and evolution of Fortnite.
Donald Mustard expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to shape Fortnite and the immense joy it has brought to the gaming community. He also pledged to remain part of the Fortnite community as a player and expressed his confidence in the capable hands of the Epic Games teams, who continue to work on exciting new developments.
As he prepares for retirement, Mustard looks forward to spending more time with his wife and family. He offered his sincere thanks to Tim Sweeney and the entire Epic Games family for their support and collaboration throughout his illustrious career.
Donald Mustard’s legacy in the gaming industry will undoubtedly be remembered for his instrumental role in the creation and evolution of Fortnite, a game that has left an indelible mark on the world of gaming and entertainment. His departure marks the end of an era at Epic Games, but the studio’s commitment to innovation and creativity remains unwavering as it continues to shape the future of gaming.
