Baldur’s Gate 3: All Races And Their Classes Work| Know Everything

A noteworthy aspect of Baldur’s Gate 3 -and by extension, of the previous ones- is the fact that players have a lot of freedom when it comes to creating their characters. Of course, throughout the game, it will be when they can develop them to the maximum, but if we want to get the most out of our “character file”, the choice of race is also a factor to take into account when planning the game. Now, it is not an easy choice, since between races and their fathoms, there are a total of 29 possibilities. In this guide, we explain what they are and the classes that combine best for them.

Setting up our character in Baldur’s Gate 3

One of the main choices when creating a new character (if we don’t choose one of the ones already pre-configured by Larian Studios to make it easier to enter the saga of the newcomers), is to decide what race our avatar will belong to in the game. Along with the choice of the class, it is probably the decision that will affect our game the most.

There are a total of 11 races available in Baldur’s Gate 3, and more than half of them have various ethnicities that partially modify the general attributes of the race from which they are descended. Some may be slight variations on the main branch, while others are barely considered a separate breed within it. In any case, the differences between one race and another are not limited to the physical or aesthetic aspect of the character; the character’s attributes are also significantly influenced, such as Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma.

Therefore, if you decide to create a character from scratch (the most attractive option to start experiencing the game) you should not select a race and class haphazardly, since if you want to play comfortably, you want to maximize the strengths of said combination of race and class. That said, the concept is not incompatible with being original and choosing a race that has no affinities with the class you are looking for. Every character will have their strengths and weaknesses, and in fact, in RPGs players are encouraged not to go for the most obvious combination and surprise with their choices. Just keep in mind the limitations of your choices when making a character token. Clarified this, let’s see what races are available to play in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Bg3 Base Human

The only ”real” race in the game (these humans have magical powers) is also the most adaptable and has hardly any negative attributes but doesn’t excel in any area either. Nor do they have differential sub-races or ethnicities from each other, if anything variations in height, skin colour, hair or eyes, but they are only aesthetic traits and do not affect what a human can and cannot do. Humans are the most common race in the Forgotten Realms and tend to have medium mobility (30 feet per turn). Regarding character attributes, those who belong to this race will have the following modifiers when creating a character:

These bonuses represent the adaptability of the species and its ”jack of all trades, master of none” classification. Choosing a human for our first game can be a safe bet since they don’t usually lose out with any area or class, but at the same time, it means not squeezing everything that a class can give itself to the maximum. Don’t let this discourage you from trying one, and it is recommended because it is a breed designed to learn to play and try a little of everything.

Best classes for humans: Any, although due to their balanced attributes, they can stand out as Paladins, Barbarians, Warriors, Wizards or Explorers.

Bg3 Base Elf

Elves are the other great race predominant in fantasy worlds, and as widespread as humans. Physically they are also quite similar to humans, although in general, they tend to be somewhat taller, none of them are bad looking and they live much longer, and in terms of mobility in the game, they also have an average type although the Elves of the Woods are more mobile. And here the similarities end. While humans can adapt to any class, elves pivot more towards a more predetermined style of play or classes by their initial bonus attributes, which depend on the sub-race to which our elf or elf belongs. These and the racial bonuses of this species are:

Depending on the type of Elf we choose, we may want to pivot to a more supportive or ranged class. Physically they are not a race designed to be on the front lines of battle, although, with the right talents and development for the class, they are capable of hand-to-hand defence if the situation calls for it. Where they falter is in Charisma, which is a race that will have it quite uphill to carry out the conversations in the story that require roles with this attribute. It is not a race to be introduced to the game since the classes that best suit its style require some knowledge of the game’s mechanics and spells.

Best classes for Elves: Mage (High Elf), Rogue, Ranger (Wood Elf) and Cleric (Wood Elf).

Bg3 Base Dwarf

The third most well-known race of the fantasy kingdoms (or second if we ask them or according to which D&D fans ) are the dwarves. Physically, they appear somewhat stocky humans and generally half or 2/3 of one’s height. But it is in their attributes that they stand out, as the entire race seems made for combat despite its somewhat small size. It is one of the best melee races, but it also has a minimal ability to control some magical elements, although it is nowhere near like the other races. In terms of mobility, they lose out a bit due to their height (as do other races such as halflings or gnomes), and their base speed is only 7.5m per turn. Dwarves are divided into three sub-races and possess the following race characteristics:

Psionic Fortress

Depending on the sub-race that we choose, our dwarf or dwarf will have some skills more similar to active combat to do damage on the front line or support from it (perhaps in the form of an off-tank). The point is that this is a race that knows how to develop and grow in combat thanks to its excellent resistance and constitution, although, like the elves, it will be difficult for them to progress in conversations with charisma or relationships with the other members of the group. At least his natural resistance to certain magic and the ability to control a little arcane discipline. He’s a solid choice as a first-game character. but it will be more difficult to handle than a human due to its low mobility, and accept that you will be left without seeing some things due to its charisma as we have mentioned.

Bg3 Drow Base

Distantly related to the elves, this race does not have sub-races ”per se” but is organized in cults. Physically and at the game level, members of this race naturally share the characteristics of the race, but depending on which deity they worship, they will follow a different personality or background. However, at the game level that does not affect. The two drow cults (Seraldine and Lolth ) are essentially the same, so unless you want to interpret a background you shouldn’t be concerned with class choice beyond attributes and characteristics:

The drow does not have magical competence as developed as the elves, however, they make up for it with Strength and a Constitution that make them valid to be front line fighters with more ease than the others. Even their charisma is superior, so that, without reaching the levels of humans, a Drow character has more numbers to experience more relationships and game content without help than previous races. However, you should leave it for a later game since their fragility makes them somewhat frustrating to handle in a first run.

Best classes for the Drow: Mage, Ranger (for skill) or Bard (for his charisma and magic resistance).

Bg3 Half Elf Base

Half-elves are, as their name suggests, half-bloods; They are generally born from the union of the elven race with the human race, but some stories include other combinations, although in Baldur’s Gate 3, for reasons of simplicity, it is limited to what is best known and collected in the D&D rulebooks (which, in addition to the regular half-elf, also includes the half-drows).

On the playable side, we’re talking about a race that combines some of the human flexibility and adaptability with the superior reflexes and magical ability of the elves or drow. This is noticeable in the base bonus to some of its attributes plus the initial possession of certain spells or tricks typical of the elven races:

After humans, half-elves are the race in Baldur’s Gate 3 with the greatest ability to adapt to any class, however, their elven lineage carries with it certain shortcomings -and strengths- typical of their race. They are still less suitable for the front line of combat, although their prowess makes them good marksmen. The fact that they have access to the magical abilities of their race and retain the charisma of their human ancestry will not limit them as much as their ”pointy-eared” parent in experiencing the game’s plot. If you want an accommodating race but not as “bland” as humans, this is an excellent choice.

Best Classes for Half-elves: Warlock (Half-high-elf, Drow) Ranger (Woods half-elf), Sorcerer (Half-high-elf), Bard (Woods half-elf)

Bg3 Base Medium

This race, physically halfway between dwarves and gnomes (and popularized by Tolkien in fantasy universes thanks to hobbits) is to the aforementioned two what half-elves are to humans and elves (in terms of gameplay ). In this case, their origin is not the result of the union of two races, but rather they are thus basic, and consequently, they have their racial characteristics. However, at least one of their sub-races is distantly related to dwarves, and that may make them good units or frontline classes, but halflings excel at stealth. that gives them their stature and because it seems that luck is always with them. Of all the sub-races in Baldur’s Gate 3, these are the most different from each other despite not having many of their traits. They are not ones designed to cast spells since they hardly have any aptitude for magic. However, their passive traits give them high survivability in situations where others would have a hard time. The light feet are ideal for progressing in the story and relationships thanks to their charisma and because they can infiltrate (besides that their mobility is not limited by the type of race), and the forte-cor is an excellent second-line unit designed to prevent any enemy from attacking the mages or healers of the backline.

However, alone this race is somewhat eastl, and they should always go in a group, since except for skill, they do not exceed any other attribute to make them self-sufficient. It is a race for group games, but well run it is fun and it does not cost as much to learn as the Elves or the Gnomes.

Best classes for halflings: Rogues (Lightfoot), Rangers (Lightfoot), Bards, and Warriors (Fortecor).

Bg3 Base Gnome

The smallest in stature of all races have a considerable range of abilities that allows them to embody magical or melee ranged classes. This makes up for their poor charisma, since in general, they all have difficulties relating to the rest of the races, especially the gnomes of the depths, although due to their vision in the dark, they are also one of the best explorers. The fact is that it is a race that, although it is not one of the most popular, does have the ability to offer various styles of play that, far from excluding each other, are complemented by others, as well as high survival due to its race characteristics.

All three sub-races of gnomes can be very proficient in magic, though those of the Deep is less so due to their natural prowess, and those of the Rocks are excellent investigators thanks to their artificer’s lore. Unfortunately, physically they can be the most fragile race, even the Rocks, but due to their limited mobility. In that aspect, it is better to have them as a third or second-line caster, although that does not mean that you cannot try to take advantage of their magical abilities to distract the enemy and try to attack them from behind.

As for Charisma, they also have a hard time experiencing the plot, but not to the point where they find it impossible. Despite its virtues, it is the most difficult race to learn to handle, more than the Elves, and they are more fragile and slower than these, so we better leave them for a third run (if you know how to carry magical Elves, you can carry them although they require a little more attention)

Best classes for Gnomes: Rogue (Deep or Forest), Sorcerer (Forest or Rock), Ranger (Forest).

Bg3 Tiefling Base

The Tieflings are similar to the Drow in the sense that they do not have sub-races but cults, but just as in the case of the ”dark elves” that was a background difference, the Tieflings can see affected not only their bonus points but also their attributes or characteristics (which compensates for the fact that they are the only race that, by default, does not gain extra points when creating the character ).

To this, we must add that each of the three deities to which the Tieflings worship grants them different spells or tricks. This makes them the most complex breed to balance.in terms of progression, since as with the others all have a certain preference for one class or another, they (along with humans and half-elves) can encompass more types of classes.

Choosing a Tiefling as a race has its pros and cons. The advantage is that they are a magical version of humans who retain a lot of charisma, so it is a good choice to experience the story with them. But the downside is that it’s probably choosing one of your three conditional cults. more than in the other races the type of class that we want to carry. They can be warriors or fighters, but their affinity for magic makes them perhaps the most “destined” to be casters or second-line units if we choose the Mephistopheles or Asmodeus variety. If we choose Zariel, we exchange this powerful magic but we win in close combat, to the point that it is, together with humans, one of the few races capable of taking full advantage of the Paladin class. They are also the ”dark” alternative to humans and half-elves and are the best race to learn how to wield magic-based classes.

Bg3 Githyanki Base

The last of the races currently available in Baldur’s Gate 3 as of today (in Early Access) is the Githyanki. These beings come from the astral plane and are of great importance in the plot of the game at hand. They have no sub-race or cults, just like humans. But they are more agile than humans, and that shows in their superior Strength and Intelligence. They are also the only race that can use Githyanki Psionics, which allows them to, among other things, jump farther, deal or undo spell damage, and even steal life. Even so, they prefer direct combat, and this can be seen from their race characteristics in terms of competition.

It could be said that, within the races, the Githyanki is the most “difficult” humanoid. It is a good gateway to more physical or advanced melee races such as dwarves or Drow. But they are not the best in charisma, quite the contrary. Because they come from another plane, they generate aversion among the other races in the game and have it more difficult than any other to relate to others. However, it can be one of the races with the most possibilities within close combat and melee. They can be considered as a solid option for a second game, or even an intermediate one.

Best classes for the Githyanki: Warrior, Barbarian, Force-based Cleric.
