Chinese Dota 2 scene is one of the most powerful in the entire world. Over the years, many teams have reached the very best levels of the game in the competition and several teams from this region have won some of the biggest international Dota 2 tournaments. When someone mentions China and Dota 2 in the same sentence, the majority of people think about Newbee. However, over the years, several other teams have also become very respectable names in the world of Dota 2 eSports competitions.
One of those teams is Vici Gaming who, at one point, was the best Dota 2 team in China. Vici Gaming is not only one team but rather a fully organized eSports organization that host teams in several other competitions besides Dota 2 such as Starcraft 2, FIFA, Hearthstone, as well as League of Legends. However, their Dota 2 team has been by far the most successful so far.
Vici Gaming History
Vici Gaming was established on October 21st, 2012 when one of the legendary Chinese Dota 2 players, Fengdidi decided to launch a team. Before establishing Vici Gaming, Fengdidi played for PanDarea Gaming so he had a lot of experience in the business. At that time, DotA was still being featured as a competition.
In order to find the right players for his new team, Fengdidi turned to the rankings of Chinese DotA players and he selected some of the highest ranked players to be the members of his new team. At that time, only one player, sydm, has been professional Dota player because he played for TyLoo before joining Vici Gaming.
All other players from their original roster have been amateur players who were provided with the opportunity to take their game to the new level. That risk proved to be very good as Vici Gaming became of the main contenders in almost all competitions in which they participated. The first opportunity for these players to show what they can do came that same year when they eliminated Noah’s Ark from the qualifiers for the 2012 G-League Season 2.
Over the years, Vici Gaming made a huge number of changes in their Dota 2 roster which is not that unusual thing as many other teams are doing the same thing. It did not take a long time for Vici Gaming to become a serious Dota 2 contender on the international Dota 2 scene. From the very start, it seemed that Vici Gaming was predestined to achieve great things and the confirmation of that fact came in 2013 when they won their first Dota 2 trophy.
During 2012, Vici Gaming did not play a lot of tournaments as they were still in the initial phases of the launch of their team. However, 2013 was their first full season in which they have shown their full talent and potential. One of the competitions in which Vici Gaming participated in 2013 was Raidcall EMS Fall LAN tournament.
In that competition, Vici Gaming had to go against Natus Vincere, DK, and Team Alliance and rarely anyone believed that Vici could be able to do anything because European sides have been dominating Dota 2 competitions at that time. However, Vici Gaming managed to overcome all obstacles and they won the title to a surprise of all who attended the competition. After that, Vici was invited to the Kingston HyperX Dota 2 League that was being held in Las Vegas. However, Vici had a very bad tournament as they struggled to win a single match. That year as well as the following one, Vici Gaming would not win any titles.
Despite that, 2014 was the year when they achieved one of their biggest successes so far. That year, they received the invitation for The International 4 which at that time has already become the biggest Dota 2 tournament in the world. Vici Gaming had an amazing tournament that year where they won the first place in the group stage and made it all the way to the grand final.
However, they were not able to go step further as Newbee was more successful in the final match which meant that Vici Gaming won the second place. Since then, Vici Gaming has had several good results but none of those came close to the one they had at the International 4.
Already at the start of the next year, Vici Gaming participated in the Dota 2 Asian Championship where they reached the grand final but could not go a step further. They were defeated by Evil Geniuses in that match, which was very surprising because Vici defeated them just one day before the finals. After that, certain problems appeared in the team.
The post-2015 DAC period featured several players leaving the team as well as joining the team. One of the players that left the team immediately after the 2015 DAC was Black and he was soon replaced by Hao in the team. That year, Vici Gaming won the trophy at the StarLadder XII by defeating Invictus Gaming in the final. They were not able to defend their title at the International that year and they finished in the fourth place at that tournament.
Since then, Vici Gaming has been in very serious problems when it comes to the results and those problems started in 2016 and they are still ongoing. In 2016, Vici Gaming played only three tournaments but they were not able to achieve a better result than the 3rd-4th place at the Shanghai Dota 2 Open.
This year, Vici Gaming has not been able to reach the main event of any Dota 2 tournaments and because of that, many believe that Vici Gaming will be making huge changes in their team in the upcoming period which means that several players from the current roster will be leaving the team.
Currently, Vici Gaming is not even close to the results that they had during their best days. Because of that, many fans have called for the change of their entire roster and Vici Gaming has listened to their fans because they made serious changes in their team not that long ago.
Currently, Vici Gaming is featuring Chen ‘Hao’ Zhihao, Zeng ‘Ori’ Jiaoyang, Zhou ‘Yang’ Haiyang, Xu ‘Hym’ Zhi and the only player that is not coming from China, Wong ‘ChuaN’ Chuan. Three of those players joined the team in 2017 while the remaining two players signed with this team around the end of 2016 which indicates that Vici Gaming has made serious changes.
However, considering that they have failed to secure their participation in any more significant tournament this year, many question whether or not the selection of players for their current roster was right. Despite that, it seems that the organization is believing in their team because there are no reports about them searching for new players.
Total Prize Money Won
As an eSports organization, Vici Gaming has won a huge amount of money so far – $6,433,663.10 to be precise. However, almost 74 percent of that amount or $4,712,179 was won by their Dota 2 team which proves that Dota 2 is by far their best niche. When it comes to the individual prize money that Vici Gaming players have won, it needs to be said that Xie ‘Super’ Junhao has won by far the biggest amount of money because he won $894,689 during his time with the team.
Considering that Vici Gaming has been one of the most popular Dota 2 teams in China, it is no wonder that many companies from the country and abroad want to sign sponsorship deals with this team. So far, Vici Gaming has announced sponsorship deals with TenWowFood, Dare You, HuoMaoTV, Biostar, HyperX, Kuaiwen, DXRacer, and HTC. Because of that, the incomes that this team had during all these years are multiple times bigger than their earnings from the prizes.
