SK Gaming had a very turbulent ESL One: Cologne. At the start of the tournament, they were defeated by Space Soldiers in the opening duel of the tournament. Since then, however, SK Gaming has been more than the efficient team. They managed to convert all their strengths into an advantage in the matches that they played. Despite that, SK Gaming had some serious issues when it comes to respecting the rules that deal with one certain aspect of the competition, and that was a timeout.
SK Gaming might be the best Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team in the world at this moment. However, that does not mean that they are allowed to disregard any rules, including the ones that deal with the issue of time. Because of that, it has been announced that SK Gaming will be penalized for their actions at the ESL One: Cologne 2017.
Sk Gaming Timeout Rule Violation
During the final match of the tournament, SK Gaming called a technical timeout when the score was 10-10 at the Train map. This stopped the map from progressing further on. Those fans who were watching the match noticed that the stream at that moment cut to commercials before Cloud9 and SK continued with the action. When the action started again, neither ESL nor anyone else was able to comment on this issue which caused even more controversies at that moment.
One day after the end of the tournament, the camera footage of the SK Gaming team which was not visible for the fans who watched the streamed showed that SK players used the technical timeout to chat with each other through the in-game chat.
According to the ESL rules for this competition and every other, as a matter of fact, the in-game chat between players during the technical timeouts is explicitly prohibited. One official from ESL has confirmed that they are aware of this issue and that they will be taking actions accordingly which means that SK Gaming will be penalized for their actions.
According to some people who are more familiar with the rules that ESL introduced for this competition, the only penalty that SK Gaming might face in this case is the reduction of the prize pool. The amount deducted from their prize share will be redistributed among other teams that secured their placements at this tournament.
Black Stain on a Perfect Performance
This issue has cast a shadow over SK Gaming’s performance at this year’s tournament as many are claiming that they gained a huge advantage by doing what they did. According to many people, their in-game chat enabled them to adjust their tactics in the middle of the game.
Cloud9 has not reacted to this issue yet, but it is expected that they will be making a statement in the next couple of days. Even though SK Gaming is the best CS:GO team in the world at this moment, this action has caused many to turn against them, and they will not have an easy job at the Krakow Major that will be starting very soon.
