About Game Award

The Game Awards is an annual awards ceremony that aims at recognizing and honoring the achievements in the video game industry. Established back in 2014, the Game Award shows are produced and hosted by game journalist Geoff Keighley, who has worked on its predecessor, the Spike Video Game Awards, for over a decade. In addition to just the awards, The Game Awards also features premieres of upcoming games and new announcement and reveals on previously-announced titles.

The awards have also drawn a lot of flak for being highly commercialized and promotional. One prevalent complaint is that there is too much time devoted promoting new games compared to celebrating award winners. There have also been disputes surrounding The Game Award. Keighley launched the 2021 awards presentation with a message condemning abuse in the business after the news of Activision Blizzard’s sexual misconduct controversy broke. Activision Blizzard was not specifically mentioned in the statement, which drew criticism for appearing to be more concerned with maintaining “valuable industry relationships” than taking a stand.
