Sonic The HedgeDog 3: Release Date, Storyline, Characters, Expectations And More
We will all agree that video game adaptations to the big screen do not usually go well. We have some well-known examples, such as those from the Mortal Kombat saga; and other more recent ones, such as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. However, luckily for us, some exceptions break this rule. The Sonic movies are a clear example of this.
Sonic: From ugly to hero
No one can doubt that Sonic is one of the most recognizable video game characters in pop culture; alongside Mario and Pac-Man. That’s why the SEGA mascot has been featured in a plethora of media outside of video games. However, it was not until 2019, that the trailer for what would be the first live-action movie of the blue hedgehog was shown. The first impressions about it were not positive at all; largely due to Sonic’s hyper-realistic design.
It was for this reason that the film was delayed for a few months, to carry out a redesign of the character that was closer to what the fans requested. That was how, in 2020, Sonic: The Movie was finally released. The film triumphed among the general public and the reproaches, due to the “ugly” design of the character, were left in the background due to the good figures it garnered at the box office; reaching to collect more than $300 million.
Due to the success of this film, Paramount Pictures and Sega were encouraged to release a second Sonic movie, which came out this year. Like its predecessor, Sonic 2: The Movie was also a success.
For this movie, they brought back more characters from the Sonic franchise, such as Tails and Knuckles; thus expanding the Sonic cinematic universe. Considering that Sonic 2 grossed more than $400 million, surpassing its predecessor, it is not surprising that, a few months after its release, the producers announced that the third movie of the blue hedgehog was a reality.
What to expect from Sonic 3?
The third instalment of Sonic was already confirmed by Paramount shortly after the release of the second film. However, it was not until this very August when, through an official statement, they would announce the release date. Sonic 3: The Movie will be released on December 20, 2024, so yes, we still have a couple of years to go back to enjoy the adventures of SEGA’s hedgehog and his friends on the big screen. Everything seems to indicate that Sonic 3: The movie will bring us back, not only to the leading trio made up of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, but they will also introduce us to new characters, including Shadow. Let’s remember that we could see the latter briefly in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2.
A bright future for Sonic
Finally, it should be noted that those responsible for the film hope to obtain the same or better results than the last two films in the franchise. Sonic 2 became the highest-grossing video game movie in history in the United States, so we can expect great things from its sequel if they set out to improve its results. In addition, the Sonic cinematic universe will continue to expand; since Sonic 3: The movie is not the only project that Paramount Pictures and SEGA have in hand. Due to the good reception from the public, it has been decided to carry out a spin-off series centred on Knuckles. This series will be exclusive to the Paramount+ platform.

The future of video game adaptations looks very promising, since in addition to Sonic, Super Mario will hit hard with the release of a great movie this coming year. However, the blue Blur has everything to continue sweeping with an animated series on Netflix, a spin-off of Knuckles in live-action and this long-awaited third project, we can’t wait!
A break in Hollywood jeopardizes the production
As you well know, since last July, the scriptwriters’ and actors’ association has been on strike to negotiate better working conditions. For this reason, the filming of films like Sonic 3 is paralyzed. However, P Paramount would be considering continuing to record scenes on the tape in which the actors do not appear, thus being able to advance work in which the situation is clarified.
At the moment, a tape delay is ruled out, but it is something that could end up happening if the situation does not change for the better in the short term. We’ll continue to update you on any news about Sonic’s future on the big screen. Remember, there’s also an animated series coming out on Netflix about the blue hedgehog, so the future for him on the big screen looks brighter than ever.
