Overwatch 2 Devs Respond To Lore-breaking Hero Age Drama
The Overwatch 2 development team has recently addressed the growing controversy surrounding the ages of heroes in the game’s lore. After revealing the birthdays and ages of every hero on September 7th, the Overwatch community quickly noticed some inconsistencies in the lore that appeared to contradict the official timeline of events in the game’s universe.
While the initial excitement over learning more about the heroes’ backgrounds was palpable, it didn’t take long for players to scrutinize the details and spot discrepancies that left them scratching their heads. Here are some of the most prominent examples of these inconsistencies:
Sojourn: According to the lore, Sojourn is stated to be 19 years old during the Omnic crisis. However, it is also revealed that she spent four years in the military before this, which raises questions about child soldiers in the Overwatch universe.
Kiriko: The age gap between Kiriko and Hanzo doesn’t add up. While Kiriko is supposed to be 19 years younger than Hanzo, official artwork depicts them training together as children, casting doubt on this age difference.
Junkrat: Junkrat’s birthdate falling on a leap year creates confusion about the timeline in which the game’s events take place.
The Overwatch community took to social media, particularly Twitter, to express their concerns and seek clarification from the game’s executive producer, Jared Neuss. One player tagged Neuss and asked, “Can we address the age thing?” In response, Neuss acknowledged that hero ages weren’t his area of expertise and deferred the question to Lead Narrative Designer and writer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie.
However, Jurgens-Fyhrie’s response did not directly address the hero age controversy. Instead, he cryptically discussed the challenges of answering lore-related questions, hinting that some mysteries might not be ready for disclosure. He stated, “A lot of the time, the answer is, ‘This is less mysterious than you think, and I absolutely cannot tell you why yet.'”
As of now, the hero age controversy in Overwatch 2 remains unresolved. Players are left wondering whether these inconsistencies were unintentional errors or deliberate narrative choices with broader implications. It’s possible that future Overwatch 2 PvE missions and updates will shed more light on the matter.
