Hearthstone has been one of the most popular eSports competitions in the last couple of years. However, in the last couple of months, many have stated that the popularity of Hearthstone is declining and from the outside, it seemed that the demand for Hearthstone tournaments was diminishing as the months go by. However, that might only be the case with certain individual tournaments because the popularity of Hearthstone has never been higher and the numbers are showing exactly that. A couple of days ago, Blizzard Entertainment, a company behind the Hearthstone game, has announced the most recent numbers about the number of players that actively play this game.
According to these numbers, the number of players who actively play Hearthstone has surpassed 70 million which is more than amazing for a game that many doomed as over and finished just a couple of months ago. The last time Blizzard came out with these numbers was back in February 2016, and back then there were 30 million Hearthstone active players, which indicates a growth by 40 million players, a rise of over 100%. However, in February 2015, Blizzard also released information about the number of players and two years ago there were ‘only’ 25 million Hearthstone active players. By comparing the numbers from the last three years, we can conclude that in this period, the number of players who play Hearthstone actively has risen for almost 50 million.
Looking at the numbers of other games, we can see that Hearthstone is not falling far behind some of the most popular eSports competition such as Overwatch, Call of Duty or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. A couple of months ago, SuperData released a report that said that Hearthstone is a game that is ‘killing itself.’ At that time, that caused a lot of problems for Hearthstone and its prospects as an eSports competition. However, despite problems caused for the game, Hearthstone has in fact managed to keep growing amid the turmoil and the increasing numbers of players are showing that the interest in this amazing card game has never been higher.
One of the key reasons that many believed that Hearthstone would die off was in the fact that the last few updates for the game by Blizzard Entertainment did not click with the public. Besides that, some of the decisions or approaches to the organization of Hearthstone tournaments and the lack of new and authentic features of the competitions have also caused many to believe that Hearthstone might be disappearing from the eSports scene. Do not get us wrong, that might still happen in the future, but the future of the game itself is much brighter because fans are sticking with the game while at the same time the game looks appealing and interesting to newly emerging players.
Because of that, in order to keep Hearthstone eSports competitions more interesting and appealing, Blizzard Entertainment will have to bring in some new approaches and features to the table that will make players and the fans buy a ticket for the Hearthstone tournaments. If Blizzard’s track record is any indication, we do believe that this will happen and that the company will not let one of its prized games to simply disappear off the eSports scene.
