The gaming division of Netflix, which debuted in late 2021 and provides free mobile games to subscribers, has expanded gradually. Based on Apptopia data, CNBC reported that the average number of users of the streaming giant’s video games in 2018 was 1.7 million, which is less than 1% of the 221 million members that Netflix had in the same year. Netflix, however, claims that the build-up was intentional. During a recent earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters informed investors that the company has not observed a “dissimilar” trend for the gaming business on the streaming platform. He pointed out that to introduce new genres to its user base, Netflix has to crawl, walk, and run. Adding a GTA component to their collection of video games can be beneficial for Netflix as the GTA franchise is the third-best-selling Games Franchise all over with the release of GTA V.
Only time will tell us if Netflix’s decision to add another popular franchise to its gaming catalogue will lead to more new subscribers to Netflix.
