Explainer: Where Does The Name Final Fantasy Saga Come From?
Square Enix intended for the Final Fantasy series to be called Fighting Fantasy, although they couldn’t give it the latter name because there was already a board game called Fighting Fantasy.
Since its inception, the name of the Final Fantasy saga has been the subject of debate and even ridicule by some gamers. It is undeniable that the series has managed to establish itself in its more than 35 years of history in one of the most important licenses in the industry, although some consider the name that Square Enix chose for it to be derisory, especially considering a large number of main instalments and spin-offs that have been released under the name of Final. Why did the Japanese company choose this name and not another? Hironobu Sakaguchi, its creator, has clarified the doubts in a statement for the thirty-fifth anniversary of the long-running franchise.
The name Final Fantasy arose from Square’s desire to have a game that could be easily shortened, similar to the Dragon Quest series, which can be shortened to DQ. The creators of the title wanted it to be abbreviated as FF, while the original name the team was going to choose was Fighting Fantasy. Unfortunately, there was already a board game called Fighting Fantasy under the registered title, forcing them to opt for Final Fantasy instead.
