One Piece To Gear 5: Luffy’s All Transformations| Names, Title And More

9 months ago By AI Smith

Although it has been on the air for years, One Piece continues to excite all many anime fans with its most mythical moments. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew have left us many moments to remember throughout 106 manga and more than 1,000 anime chapters, including spectacular transformations that have marked a before and after in the history of the series. And, taking into account that the next episode will feature a moment long awaited by the fan community, we see fit to review all the conversions that the bearer of the Gomu Gomu no Mi Fruit has gone through throughout his adventures.

As you can imagine, here we deal with the transformations seen up to chapter 1,070 of the anime. If you are not up to date with the series, we recommend leaving this reading to avoid possible spoilers.

If you’ve been following the long journey of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji and company to this day, you probably know that the captain of the Straw Hats is about to undergo an unprecedented transformation: Gear 5. Right now we will not go into details about the vicissitudes of this latest evolution, which has already been revealed in the One Piece manga, so we will refrain from discussing details or images of this latest conversion. What we will do, however, is remember all the changes Luffy has undergone with the previous Gears, also known as ‘Gears’.

Gear 2

It was Luffy’s first major transformation and a sign that the Gomu Gomu no Mi could do more than just turn its wielder into rubber. To carry out this evolution, the captain of the Straw Hats pumps his blood faster so that nutrients and oxygen reach his destination sooner. In this way, the character can even triple his performance by drastically increasing his speed and strength, which is accompanied by a constant expulsion of steam.

In its early days, Gear 2 left devastating consequences on Luffy, such as extreme exhaustion and a reduction in his life expectancy. However, after many years of training, the pirate can now use it without major inconvenience immediately after the battle.

Gear 3

It was first revealed in Enies Lobby, hinting that Luffy had yet to show his body’s true potential. To activate this Gear, the protagonist blows a large amount of air into his thumb to inflate the bones of a part of his body, which is capable of dealing high damage with one hit. Upon learning the busoshoku haki, which allows the user to create force similar to invisible armour, the Gear 3’s utility was greatly increased.

In the beginning, Gear 3 had the most comical effect on Luffy: it reduced him to the size of a child after use. The later chapters of One Piece stopped showing this particularity since the training carried out by the captain of the Straw Hats during the two years of training allowed him to execute the ability without this secondary effect. It is worth noting that, from this point on, the protagonist can also use Gear 2 and Gear 3 in combination.

Gear 4

This is probably the most complex Gear of all that has been shown so far in the One Piece anime. First shown in Dressrosa, Luffy activates this conversion by coating his entire body in busoshoku haki and inflating all of his muscles, giving him brutal abilities in a matchup. However, the transformation of the character adapts to the circumstances of the battle, so Gear 4 is divided into three different ways when it comes to fighting characteristics. We are specifically talking about ‘bound man’, ‘tankman’ and ‘snake-man’, three options with pros and cons for each type of combat. Due to their usefulness at some key points in the story, we have decided to detail them briefly in the paragraphs below.

Boundman

It is the first to be released alongside Gear 4. Known in English by the name ‘Bounce-man’, its composition resembles that of a rubber ball and therefore allows Luffy to bounce around the stage. This is accompanied, of course, by an increase in strength, devastating power, greater defence and the possibility of changing the direction of his attacks, among other improvements.

Tankman

This form of Gear 4 is accompanied by one of Luffy’s great passions: eating. After ingesting large amounts of food and becoming drastically fat as a result, the captain of the Straw Hats can become a huge ball and extremely difficult to knock down. Ultimately, the tankman transformation is also combined with the busoshoku Haki to greatly increase the user’s defence.

Snake Man

Here, Luffy significantly reduces his defense to increase his speed to levels never seen before. Combined with the busoshoku haki, which this time only covers his hands and legs, the character can move quickly and hit all of his blows, as he can also attack an opponent from any direction with ease. Of course, here he loses the ability to bounce, which is the main feature of the aforementioned bound man.

Bonus Transformations

So far, we’ve been talking exclusively about Luffy’s different Gear forms due to the imminent introduction of Gear 5, but these aren’t the only transformations the One Piece protagonist has undergone on his adventures. There are other abilities that, although they have not been shown again in the anime, have left their mark on the memory of the community.

Nightmare Form

During the Thriller Bark arc, Luffy transformed as a result of Gecko Moria’s abilities by introducing dozens of shadows into his body. This caused a considerable increase in physical power and, as you can imagine, a very different look than what the captain of the Straw Hats was used to. This form has only been seen on one occasion.

Luffy-Afro

Not a powerful ability, but rather a comical makeover. Although it does not provide changes in the fighting style, contrary to what happens with other transformations that we tell you about in this article, it is still a particular way that many fans miss. In this sense, many ask for his return, at least in a filler chapter.
