Butareba: The Story Of A Man Turned Into A Pig Gets A Release Date For 7th October 2023
The long-awaited television anime, ‘Butareba: The Story of a Man Turned into a Pig,’ is slated to release on 7th October 2023. The announcement was made during the Aniplex Online Fest 2023 livestream event which was held on Sunday, 10th September. The anime is based on Takuma Sakai’s Heat the Pig Liver light novel series.
The Sunday reveal was packed with key visuals, announcement for theme song artists, more casts, and a promotional video. Included in the list of new cast members is Mamiko Noto as Brace. The opening theme song called ‘Watashi ga Warau Riyu wa’ (The Reason I Laugh Is) will be performed by ASCA while the ending theme song called ‘Hitori Janai yo’ (I’m Not Alone) will be performed by Myuk.
Fans of the novel series will now be treated to a visual feast on 7th October 2023, where the anime will premier on Tokyo MX, Gunma TV, BS11, and Tochigi TV. The series will later air on CBC TV, YTV, and AT-X.

Directing the anime is Masayuki Takahashi who was the assistant director on other anime like ‘I Now Wander the Dungeon,’ ‘Higehiro,’ and ‘Reborn as a Vending Machine.’ He worked at project No.9, a Japanese animation studio, to bring the novel series to life. Screenwriter and singer, Deko Akao, who has worked in ‘Komi Can’t Communicate,’ ‘Higehiro,’ ‘Flying Witch’ and more, is overseeing the scripts for the series. The character designs are by Susume Watanabe, who has worked in ‘Yojo Shacho’ and ‘Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!’. Music composition for the upcoming series is done by Kenichiro Suehiro (Globlin Slayer, Cells at Work!, Re: ZERO-Starting Life in Another World) and MAYUKO who has previously worked on the ‘Cells at Work!’ theme song.
A brief synopsis of the anime reveals that an ordinary otaku, a person obsessed with manga, anime etc, is reincarnated as a pig after losing consciousness while eating raw pig liver. What ensues after this a fantasy adventure with a kind girl called Jess who has an ability to read minds.

Takuma Sakai, creator of the light novel series on which the anime is based, launched the novel series in March 2020. The illustrations were done by Asagi Tosaka, an artist who has previously worked on The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy and Girly Air Force. At the 26th Dengeki Novel Prize in 2019, Sakai won gold for his novel series after which he went ahead and launched it. Currently, the novels are being published in print by Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint.
As of December 2022, the novel has seven volumes and has inspired an ongoing manga adaptation by drawn Minami. The manga debuted in Kadokawa’s Dengeki Maoh publication in August 2020.
